TYPES OF CEREMONIES AVAILABLE IN GRAN CANARIA AND SPAIN
The Civil Code for Marriage in Spain is quite complicated and what you read on the Internet is often outdated. This is the current information as at January 2012
CIVIL WEDDINGS
The law does not allow for Civil Weddings for non-residents in Gran Canaria as the process that they have on the island is restrictive and not non-resident friendly, therefore couples will have to marry legally in their own country before coming to the island and then have a blessing or continental style ceremony in Gran Canaria.
CATHOLIC CHURCH WEDDINGS
Catholic Weddings are legally binding in Gran Canaria and take place at the Local Catholic Church in Playa del Ingles and are conducted by the English Catholic Priest who works on the island and is the only person able to take the English Speaking Catholic Weddings. He will also conduct weddings where only one of the couple are Catholic. We have an additional fact sheet for these ceremonies – no pre-visit is required as the paperwork is arranged through your own local priest and the diocese in Gran Canaria. Catholic Church Weddings are limited to Wednesdays. Also the is now a limit in place for the number of weddings for non-residents during the year
BLESSINGS
These are popular across Europe and are conducted by a recognised celebrant or priest and this a ceremony where the legal paperwork is signed before the actual ceremony takes place in Spain. The ceremony is then designed around your own requirements and will be conducted in a dignified manner. This is not a legally binding ceremony. It is not possible for non residents to have a legally binding wedding in Gran Canaria
SAME SEX CEREMONIES
Ceremonies for couples of the same sex are organised on an equal basis for everyone and we organise the majority of same sex ceremonies on the island throughout the year and are internationally recognised for our services on an equal basis. Non Residents cannot have a legally binding ceremony in Gran Canaria.
